Peace of Work • Opening June 7, 5-8pm

Theresa Girard

Where did the phrase ‘Piece of work’ come from? The origin of this phrase is somewhat unclear, but it’s believed to originate in the 16th century. One theory is that it comes from the phrase “a work of art,” which was used to describe somethiing that was aesthetically pleasing or skillfully crafted.

Some may say “she’s a piece of work” I’ll take the meaning of the above in response. “All work is valid” and these paintings harken back to my early work with a focus on peace. Peace of what was, peace in silence, peace from disturbance. peace in the studio. Many paintings are on paper, one of my early affordable supports. It felt good to get reacquainted with its feel and versatility. Can a work of art make one feel peaceful? I welcome you to try. In gratitude.

The creation of these sculptures is a partially, loosely defined act of rebellion after far too many years in the arena of the commercial and advertising world .

Born from sketches that nibble around my brain...without constraints, predetermined concepts or the influnce of assignments - their evolution into three dimension is an interesting transformation. And suprising.

There is, I believe far more to them than their initial whimsicality. And at the very least something to observe and consider in their subtle complexities.

Construction: Most of the sculptures are made with wire, paper, wood, paper clay and other assorted materials. I try to make all the parts to keep a consistent look and value for each piece .
